How the Pomodoro technique works
- Pick one task.
- Work with full focus until the timer rings (25 minutes by default).
- Take a 5-minute break: stand up, stretch, drink water.
- After four focus sessions, take a longer 15 to 30 minute break.
The fixed, short time boxes make it easier to start and harder to get distracted. Read our full guide to the Pomodoro technique.
Choosing your times
25/5 suits most study and admin work. Try 50/10 for deep work such as writing or coding, and shorter sprints if you are easily distracted. Adjust until the breaks feel like real rest, not just a pause.
Tips
- Silence your phone and close unrelated tabs before you start.
- Write distracting thoughts on a notepad and handle them in the break.
- Track completed sessions to see your real focus time.
- Do not skip breaks: they keep your attention fresh.
