Choosing the right barcode type
| Use case | Type |
|---|---|
| Retail products sold in shops worldwide | EAN-13 (or UPC-A in the US and Canada) |
| Small packages | EAN-8 |
| Inventory, SKUs, internal labels, any text | Code 128 |
| Industrial and automotive labels | Code 39 |
| Shipping cartons | ITF-14 |
| Books and magazines add-ons | EAN-5 and EAN-2 |
| Libraries and blood banks | Codabar |
Retail barcodes (EAN and UPC) must be registered with GS1 so your numbers are unique worldwide. Internal barcodes such as Code 128 are free to use for your own stock and documents.
Print tips
- Keep high contrast: black bars on a white background.
- Leave quiet zones on the left and right; the margin setting does this.
- Do not scale the barcode non-proportionally.
- Print at 300 dpi or higher, and test with your scanner.
