What this tool does
It reads text aloud using your device's built-in voices through the Web Speech API. Because the voices run on your own device, nothing is uploaded and there is no usage limit.
Good uses
- Proofreading: hearing a draft read aloud reveals awkward sentences and missing words.
- Accessibility and reading support for long articles.
- Language learning, to hear pronunciation at a slow speed.
- Listening to notes while you do something else.
Getting better voices
Quality depends on your system. Modern phones and recent versions of Windows, macOS, Chrome and Edge include natural-sounding voices. Open your system's speech or language settings to add more.
Tips
- Add punctuation: it controls pauses and intonation.
- Spell out abbreviations if they are read wrongly.
- Lower the speed to 0.8 for dense material or raise it to 1.3 to skim.
