MUSIC PUBLISHING
Own Your Songs. Collect with Clarity.
Dark Lab Records Publishing is a digital-first music publishing administration company with offices in the UK and Canada. It looks after the business side of songs: registering compositions, tracking writers and splits, following royalty income by song and streaming service, and issuing statements. Unlike a traditional publisher it does not take ownership of the song, so rights holders keep their copyright. Their audience ranges from independent songwriters to publishers and labels, and many of their creators are hip-hop and urban artists working across several languages and countries. They needed a website that explained a complicated, jargon-heavy business in plain words and gave people a clear path to sign up.
Results at a glance
- A complicated business explained in a few minutes of reading
- One clear path from first visit to a registered account
- Trust signals (200+ territories, industry memberships, partners) visible above the fold
- Songwriters, publishers and labels each land on a page written for them
The Challenge
Music publishing is confusing for most creators. Royalties come from many streaming services, territories and collection societies, and a newcomer has no idea what happens to their money. The site had to build trust fast for a company that handles other people's income, speak to songwriters, publishers and labels at the same time, and turn curious visitors into registered accounts without drowning them in industry terms.
Our Solution
We designed the site around one promise, "Own your songs. Collect with clarity.", and a simple five-step story: onboard, register, track, collect, statement. Separate pages speak to songwriters, publishers and labels, and artists, while a short three-step version ("Create your account, add songs and writers, track royalties and statements") sits near every call to action. Product-style previews of the dashboard show what members get, and a resources area with a blog, guides and an FAQ answers the questions people ask before they trust a publisher with their catalog.

Design & Development
The brand sits between finance and music, so the design had to feel both credible and creative. We kept the layout clean and data-friendly, with dashboard previews that show real concepts such as earnings by song, pending and paid statuses, and downloadable statements. Plain-language headings replace industry jargon, and generous spacing keeps long explanations easy to scan on a phone.
- Brand and visual direction
- Services and how-it-works pages
- Songwriter, publisher and label pages
- Dashboard and statement previews
- Trust section with partners and memberships
- Blog, guides and FAQ layout
- Mobile-first responsive design
Launch & After Work
After launch we focused on making the content easy for search engines and new visitors to find: clear page titles, structured FAQ content, fast loading and a blog structure for guides such as music publishing basics and how songwriter royalties work across streaming services and territories.
- Technical SEO and page speed
- FAQ and guide content structure
- Analytics and conversion tracking
- Content updates and new guides
Final Result
Dark Lab Records Publishing now has a website that makes a hard-to-explain business simple. Songwriters, publishers and labels can see what the service does, how royalties are tracked and what a statement looks like before they sign up, which is exactly the clarity the company promises.
