What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? SEO for the AI Search Era

People now ask AI tools instead of typing keywords. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is how you earn mentions and citations in those answers, minus the hype.

Not long ago, search meant typing keywords and scanning ten blue links. Today millions of people type a full question into an AI assistant and read a single synthesised answer. If your brand is not part of that answer, those users never see you. That is the problem generative engine optimization (GEO) tries to solve. Because the topic is full of hype, we compared four sources (Google's own documentation, AirOps, neuroflash and RankAI), and we flag where claims are unverified.

Key takeaways

  • GEO aims to get your content cited inside AI answers; SEO aims to rank it in a list of results.
  • The two overlap heavily. Google says standard SEO fundamentals are all that is required for its AI features.
  • The common tactics: direct answers, clear structure, evidence from named sources, fresh content and mentions on other credible sites.
  • Be sceptical of precise statistics and "secret files". Many come from vendors selling GEO tools.

What Is GEO?

AirOps defines GEO as getting AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to cite and recommend your brand inside the answers they generate. Success is measured by citations, mentions and share of voice, with traditional rankings as a secondary signal. neuroflash notes that the term comes from academic research (a Princeton-led study in 2024), not from a marketing agency. The same article cautions that the study's headline visibility lift was an average measured on older systems, so it is not a guarantee for today's engines.

SEO vs GEO

SEOGEO
GoalA high position in a list of resultsA place inside the generated answer
CompetitionTen or more links per pageA handful of cited sources
Main metricRankings, clicksCitations, mentions, share of voice
FoundationCrawlable, useful, authoritative pagesThe same, plus quotable structure and outside corroboration

So the foundations in our technical SEO checklist still matter. RankAI makes an interesting point (from its own data, unverified): search rank is a weak predictor of AI citation, so being on page one is not enough on its own.

What Google Actually Says

Google's documentation on AI Overviews and AI Mode is refreshingly plain. To appear, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; there are no extra technical requirements. The advice is standard: allow crawling, use internal links, keep important content in text, make structured data match the visible page, and keep Merchant Center and Business Profile data current. Google explicitly says you do not need to create special AI files, extra markup or new schema.org data. It also notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in the Search Console performance report, so you can measure it.

That is a useful corrective to vendor advice. One of the guides we read recommends an llms.txt file but offers no evidence that it improves citations, and its author sells an app for creating it.

8 Practical GEO Tactics

  1. Open sections with a direct answer. AirOps suggests a self-contained answer an engine can lift without surrounding context, then add detail.
  2. Use descriptive headings and structure. Question-style headings, short paragraphs, lists and comparison tables make passages easy to extract.
  3. Back claims with evidence. Specific numbers tied to named, verifiable sources, as we do in this article, are easier for models to trust and reuse.
  4. Show real authors and expertise. Named authors, bios and first-hand examples separate you from generic summaries.
  5. Keep content fresh. neuroflash notes that unrefreshed pages lose citations more often; update facts and dates on a schedule.
  6. Earn third-party mentions. AirOps and RankAI both stress that engines weigh outside consensus heavily: reviews, community discussions, industry press, partner pages.
  7. Add FAQ content with matching structured data where it genuinely helps the reader, and make sure the markup mirrors the visible text.
  8. Stay crawlable and fast. If bots cannot read the page, nothing else matters. See our Core Web Vitals guide.

Write for People First

The temptation is to write "for the AI". Resist it. The best GEO content is simply the best answer to a real question, written clearly by someone who knows the subject. Keyword stuffing and thin pages work even less well in AI search than in classic SEO.

How to Measure Progress

  1. Build a prompt list. RankAI suggests tracking 20 to 50 real buyer questions; neuroflash suggests starting with 15 to 20. Record which sources each engine cites today.
  2. Repeat the checks. neuroflash stresses that answers vary between runs, so one manual check is unreliable. Sample the same prompts repeatedly over weeks.
  3. Track citation share and share of voice against competitors, plus sentiment (are mentions favourable?).
  4. Watch referrals and branded search. AI-referred traffic is usually small but may convert well; check AI Overview and AI Mode data in Search Console and your analytics.
  5. Iterate. Rewrite pages that earn no citations, then re-measure; refresh priority pages quarterly.

A Note on Statistics

Several of the sources we read are vendors, and many percentage claims in them have no linked methodology. We left those out. If you see a precise lift such as "+115%" or "4.4x" without a method, treat it as marketing until proven otherwise.

Where to Start This Week

Pick your five most important pages. Add a clear summary at the top, an FAQ section, an author name and updated facts with named sources. Then read how Google's AI summaries change click behaviour in our guide to AI Overviews and SEO. Need help restructuring your content or site for AI search? Frequently asked questions

What is GEO?+

Generative engine optimization is the practice of structuring and publishing content so AI answer engines can understand it, trust it and cite or recommend it inside their generated answers, rather than only ranking it in a list of links.

Does GEO replace SEO?+

No. Every source we reviewed treats it as an extension. Google itself says there is nothing special to do for its AI features beyond standard SEO fundamentals: be crawlable, indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special AI markup?+

Google says you do not need special AI files, extra markup or new schema.org data to appear in its AI features. Some vendors recommend llms.txt, but the guides we read gave no evidence that it improves citations.

Can I guarantee my site appears in AI answers?+

No. You can improve the odds, but you cannot control the engines. Judge progress by trends across repeated checks, because AI answers change from run to run.
